Royal Vienna Porcelain |
|
|
The Vienna Porcelain Factory was established in 1719 by Claudius Innocentius du Paquier, a Dutchman, who began making hard paste porcelain with the help of two workmen from Meissen in Germany. That explains the similarity of these two porcelain manufacturers.
In 1744 he sold the manufacture to Austria (meaning the Empress). This is the time the famous beehive mark started to appear on the ceramics.
Funny enough, it is not a beehive after all. The stamp symbolizes the red white red shield of the Habsburgs and the pointy end should be on the bottom. This is one of the first signs of a fake. Of course there are very old and valuable fakes out there ...:)
Today the tradition and craftsmanship of the Royal Vienna Porcelain manufacture is continued by Augarten Porcelain, which produces fine porcelain at the original Royal Vienna site.
