Otto Wagner - Architect |
Otto Wagner was born in Vienna in 1841. Already in 1864 he opened his own architecture firm. Later on he sometimes distanced himself from his earlier work.
In the late 1890's and early 1900's he was influential in the design of the famous Vienna Secession - not only the building but also the movement. As a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna he left a major imprint on future Austrian architects, shaping not only his Viennese buildings. His students included Olbrich and Josef Hoffmann!
Today the tourists and architecture students flock to the Postsparkassenamt (1904-06), the Kirche Am Steinhof (1902-07) and the station houses of the Vienna subway (then it was called the Stadtbahn, 1892-1901). He died in 1918.
