Travel Literature, Landscape photography and books full of these wonderful pictures - first in black and white, later in color - started in the wake of the upcoming hiking movement and of tourism.
A few words on the history of hiking in Europe: Let us look back a couple of centuries: you can call Jean Jaques Rousseau the first 'Hiker', who walked all over Switzerland on foot. Hiking as form of productive analysis with the landscape, the own feelings: of bourgois leisure-time activity was born. At this time walking and hiking was not at all romantic for the poor - they had enough 'exercise' and no leisure time!
One hundred years later, workers had sunday off and could sometimes go into the woods and up the mountains: the Hiking section of the labour movement (in Austria: Naturfreunde) was founded in the 1890's and grew very fast. In early 1900 the movement Wandervogel became very popular. At the turn of the 19th century authors began writing travel guidebooks, literature about hiking and mountaineering. Those books already contained photographs, but it was very expensive then and so the real break-through of artistic landscape photography books started after WW2, when printing these books became more cost effective. We list wonderful vintage books with landscape photography - mostly from Germany, Austria, but also from other European countries.
