The 20th century produced exciting art in Austria. Starting with Jugendstil und Wiener Secession - Austrian equivalents to the arts and crafts movement in the US - Vienna was one of the European cultural centers.
This changed mid-century. The Nazis proclaimed some of the best artists as 'entartet'. It was almost considered a sign of not being a 'good' artist amongst liberal artist circles, not to be included in the famous 'Entartete Kunst' show.
